Types OF Tyres

Types OF Tyres

Radial Ply Tyres

These are the most common tyres in use on Irish roads on roughly 90% of road vehicles. Some radial ply car tyres even have a run flat capability which is known as a Self-Supporting Run Flat (SST) tyre. These are becoming more common as a number of car manufacturers are fitting them as standard. Radial ply tyres come either textile or steel braced and are marked with the letter ”R” and sometimes the word Radial.

Diagonal (Cross) Ply Tyres

These are an older style of tyre and are rarely found on cars as they have been effectively replaced by radial ply tyres.

Self-Supporting Run Flat Tyres

Self-Supporting Run Flat (SST) have been designed to give the driver a limited run on time after having a puncture. These tyres are marked with a “RF” on the side wall. In order to be classed as a run flat tyre they must be able to drive a minimum of 50 miles (80 km) at a speed of 50 mph (80 kmph) and at a minimum of the maximum load capacity. It is essential the vehicle is equipped with a tyre pressure monitoring system to enable use of run flat tyres.
