An Garda Síochána recently stopped a motorist who was recklessly travelling at 176km/h in a vehicle that had defective tyres.

Members of the Dundalk Roads Policing Unit were conducting speed checks on the M1 when they detected the speeding vehicle.

Gardaí say the car was stopped and it was found that the vehicle had defective tyres.

Gardaí add the driver was arrested and proceedings are to follow.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) states that by law, it is a driver’s responsibility to make sure that their vehicle meets legal requirements and is in a roadworthy condition at all times.

If you are convicted of the offence of driving with dangerous tyres, you could be fined up to €2,500, or receive a 3-month prison sentence, or both.

You will also have five penalty points on your licence on conviction.
