While some car manufacturers have a reputation for reliability, others have not fared so well over the decades. But which brands have passed the test of time and proven to be the best investment? We take a closer look at what the latest statistics have to say.

Joint #5: Toyota and Mini

In joint fifth place according to the most up to date industry data are manufacturers Toyota and Mini, with an overall reliability rating of 97.0%. 

While it comes as no surprise to see one of the leading Japanese manufacturers ranking highly, given their reputation for being extremely demanding when it comes to quality control, the Mini is perhaps a less likely candidate – not because of any prejudice against the brand, but more perhaps because it is simply such a standalone icon that it is not often pitted against others. To rank alongside Toyota is, to be fair, a testament to the quality of British manufacturing.

Joint #3: Suzuki and Hyundai

It is certainly no surprise to see more than one Japanese automobile manufacturer in this ranking, with Suzuki performing even better than Toyota overall. They are joined in a number three tie – sharing a reliability score of 97.1% – with Hyundai, the South Korean multinational automotive manufacturer headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. 

Founded in 1967, Hyundai has a long history of reliability as a brand, although their more recent explorations in the world of electric cars have so far not lived up to expectations, with the Kona Electric being recently listed as one of the least reliable electric cars on the market.

#2: Dacia

When you think of the top car manufacturers, Dacia is not a brand that immediately comes to mind. The Romanian company was established in 1966, before being sold 33 years later to the French car manufacturer Groupe Renault. 

Although Dacia may have earned a reputation for producing budget cars, they clearly haven’t compromised when it comes to quality, with a level of reliability that definitely makes them a brand that punches above their weight at 97.3%.

#1: Lexus

Given their reputation for luxury and high-tech, one might think that the Lexus brand carries a higher risk of things going wrong. The stats say otherwise, however, with an overall score of 98.7% putting the brand at the top of the table as the undisputed champion when it comes to reliability. 

As the old adage goes, it would appear that you really do get what you pay for with this particular manufacturer.
